Impromptu Journey: A Rollercoaster of Unplanned Adventures

Last Friday 23 Feb 2024, a spontaneous twist of fate led me on an unexpected journey from the bustling streets of Delhi to the serene city of Mathura. It all began with a late-evening call from a business colleague, summoning me to seal a crucial deal. Without a second thought, I grabbed my laptop bag and hastily exited the office.

As my colleague swiftly picked me up within ten minutes, our journey commenced with a sense of urgency. Before I knew it, we found ourselves speeding along the western peripheral highway, en route to Palwal – the gateway to our final destination, Mathura.

However, our adventure hit a speed bump at the Palwal Toll Plaza Exit. It dawned on us that the FastTag balance was running on fumes. With no option but to backtrack, we parked our car near the toll, turning an inconvenience into an opportunity. While waiting for the FastTag balance to update through a quick UPI payment, nature beckoned, and we took advantage of the pause to relieve our bladders.

In the midst of this unplanned escapade, I realized the stark contrast in preparedness. Clad in jeans, a tee, and a jacket – remnants of my office attire – I was far from equipped for an impromptu road trip. On the contrary, my colleague Rituraj and his friend Love had anticipated the journey’s uncertainties. Armed with blankets, spare clothing, toothbrushes, and other essentials, they were ready for the unexpected.

In my hurried departure from the office, I had left my wallet behind, leaving me with only a laptop bag and a mobile phone, sans charger. As the road stretched ahead, this unplanned journey became not just a business pursuit but a tale of camaraderie, resourcefulness, and navigating the twists and turns of life on the open road.

Midnight Adventures and Unexpected Twists: A Road Trip Tale

Late into the night, halfway through our journey, we found ourselves facing an unexpected challenge – a dead phone battery and an empty wallet. As we exited the toll plaza, a desperate need for both a phone charger and some sustenance became evident.

With no immediate solution in sight, I suggested a tea break to my travel companions, explaining my predicament. Love, a fellow tea enthusiast, wasted no time and steered the car towards Highway Gulshan Dhaba in Palwal. Little did we know that this pit stop would turn into a memorable chapter of our road trip.

As we entered the roadside eatery, the aroma of freshly cooked food surrounded us. Families returning from Mathura, Vrindavan, and Agra were enjoying their meals, and watching them only intensified our hunger. Despite initially ordering a modest meal of chapatis and dal, our appetite seemed insatiable. The order quickly escalated to 12 chapatis, 2 plates of dal, and 3 cups of tea. The quantity may have surpassed the quality, but the camaraderie and the joy of the unexpected feast were worth the splurge.

With our hunger satiated, we settled the bill and resumed our journey, entering Vrindavan around midnight. However, our trials were far from over. Attempts to contact our destination lead proved futile, and when Rituraj called the hotel where he had booked a room online, we were met with an unfortunate revelation. Due to our tardiness and the hotel’s policy, the room was given away to another guest.

Now stranded with nowhere to go and exhausted from the search for a new room, frustration set in. Budget constraints and a less-than-ideal location added to the challenges. While my companions opted to spend the night in the car with blankets at their disposal, I sought a moment of solace in a nearby shop.

Luck was on my side when the shop owner happened to have the exact charger I needed. Within minutes, my phone battery jumped to 12%, and with a glimmer of hope, I dialed the first number that came to mind. The night had taken unexpected turns, but little did we know that this unplanned detour would become a memorable chapter in our road trip tale.
